Don’t Car Jack! Hack!

Filed under: Cybersecurity — Patrick Durusau @ 10:33 am

Two thieves in Houston, Texas have demonstrated a safe alternative to car jacking, car hacking!

We have all seen news videos of car jacking incidents:

It is no longer necessary for thieves to endanger others or to face the harsh penalties for car jacking.

Here’s the gist of the story:

The two men have also been filmed during a theft of a Jeep Wrangler, the surveillance video shows the suspects got under the hood, cut wires of an alarm and then jumped inside the SUV. Once inside, he used the database and the vehicle identification number to program a new key fob for the Jeep.

Once inside the vehicle, the criminals used the laptop running the software that accessed the database of the vehicle identification number to program a new key fob.
Huston police identified and arrested 2 men while it was investigating a series of car thefts made using a pirated software running on the thieves’ laptop

Advantages to car hacking:

  • Thieves focus on newer model cars
  • No endangerment of drivers
  • Lesser penalties:

The federal armed carjacking law, which took effect in 1992, carries penalties of up to 15 years in prison for each count; 25 years if someone is seriously injured; and life in prison or the death penalty if someone is killed. If a gun is used in the carjacking, extra years are added to the sentence. Carjackers will drive themselves to severe penalties in Detroit

  • No high speed police chases endangering innocent others

Finally, an advance in technology that benefits drivers, thieves, police and the public. Who would have thought?
